I know very little (well close to nothing) about how these things work. Server side stuff scares/and bores this amateur would be website owner(well I have a couple flat html pages with adsense on them but thats hardly a web site)
Curious though...
Are there "security experts" of the entrepeneurial type who's compensation was based on whether or not the were able to crack someones system?
Certainly some ex-hackers work as consultants who are hired to recommend protections against attacks they can think of but a pure profit motive of pay to break in seems like it would spur the geniuses who can't be bothered with the interpersonal tact to actually interact as a consultant.

+1
and I think moaning too loudly about a half a day down-time is sillly.. it's a a recreational site, no serious business related service and some occasional downtime is expectable just like you'd expect your utilities to be interupted occasionally in a storm etc.
Shutting down for security precautions after an attack from a group that seriously compromised Citibank is definitely reasonable. How amateur of a mistake or how preventable might be material to your respect for the technical prowess for the company but given the group, the context and the response it is definitely not an example of poor treatment of consumers. (the new forums was a doozy of an amateur blow it because even I as an amaeteur knew that including a unhashed identification number in a URL is something any begining web developer should know about.... if something like that surfaces and it compromised customer data..well then i'd change my tune)

Why CCP suddenly took credit for making sure credit card data was safe makes no sense, as someone attempting to obtain files would not call attention to themselves with something as stupid and simple as a DOS attack.
interestingly humorous... I hope that was the logic of someone up the line of command who was clueless about such things and who was a typical petty tyrant manager who couldn't find the gray matter to open his mind to suggestions and underlings not wanting to do lasting relationship with said manager (who might be the key holder to their job security).
I love that kinda drama for drama sake.. I don't see it as any big failing .. typical corporate stuff and to be expected.

It sounds like CCP has ****ed someone off big time whom is retaliating by flooding the servers. And CCP to pull some smoke and mirrors has used that to their advantage to try to make themselves look like heros.
It's the Anomolie and subsequent Jump Bridge nerf. ANGRY CARE-BEARS !
Originally by: Sister Virgin To players; Until CCP does that, I predict they could be down for days until law enforcement can intervene.
I don't get that.. (sure you're not making your own mistake like the first item above?)
If its a virus sort of infection thats in turn causing computers all over to flood the sites even sending the culprits to the firing line isn't going to stop the process... they've released the virus...they can't call it back with a whistle can they? Certainly if it were just a few ip addresses where the dos was orginating from, the big pipes would have shut their access down immediateley after contact.

...
ping flood, syn flood, bot flood whatever. There are several types of dDos's and as phreaker you know there are several strategies available to reach your goal.
One of them is called "distraction".
They're not heroes. They took the appropriate measures.
"Seek some advice and do some research about how eBay and Amazon prevent this." Please learn more about persistent environments, client-server connections in a both stateless and statefull persistent environments. Not even Amazon or Ebay are invulnerable. If you somehow think they are, you are not a REAL hacker.

Interesting... I learned something else! I enjoy this more than updating trade prices or gate camping or grinding tank xp!

So much rage for such a small amount of time lost on the scale of things.
Very rarely is EVE unavailable for people whose prime time gaming hour is about now.
Whereas people with a prime time gaming time nearer to DT have to experience DT (which is just luck of the draw) but also have to put up with upgrades, patches of patches and extended DTs for server start up failures.
These things happen, but any forum griping results in howls of contempt from others posting from other time zones. Insults and all types of abusive comments fly where the default position is personal attack without consideration for the frustrations of others.
So I have sat here watching all this unholy rage unfold in front of this as for the first time a group unable to play for the first time in what must be a very, very long time post in a manner that makes me wonder why CCP even bother to keep the forum open.
People who is the Oceanic region who have had patch after patch and extended DT for months don't rage for free skill points, nor demand compensation for lost gaming time.
I could simply repeat all the usual comments that in our geography receive to you if we even mention extended outages, but I won't.
Just remember how you feel now when we lose several evenings of play for your benefit and dare to complain.
Here Here well said and put
I hope the people whining are trolling... trolling is a very fun part about the game...if they're really sad about not beign able to play internet spaceships for a day or two they got problems.. trolling? good man to man hijinx... sorta like snapping with the towel in the locker room

Originally by: Zleon Leigh Since CCP decided to crowd us all in here to muffle the different aspects even though many of us had started threads long before this one... DDOS - Do your part!
Hopefully you (EVE players) took the 6 hour downtime to let the virus checker complete its background scan of your system. No? Didn't do that?
Don't be a Zombie!!! Run Anti-virus and Trojan checking programs (and anything else legit) now and make sure you are not part of the DDOS problem. But- be very careful of where you get these programs - remember the recent Apple lesson.
Don't think it's you? - a friend found *3* Trojans on his comp today - after scanning clean yesterday.
lol
a reasonable suggestion.. i was just having fun with the banter and didn't expect that
complete scan underway...
